Dallas? What Happened to the Dirty Slut you used to be?
I got back from my week long trip to Dallas yesterday. Let's just say it wasn't nearly as much fun as my last trip there, nor was it as much fun as my last Winter Meetings in New Orleans in 2003. Let me give you a short recap.
Sunday
10:45 flight from "lovely" Raliegh-Durham International Airport. Apparently no one in this area knows how to use one of the self check-in machines at the airport which was good for me b/c the line to talk to a person was really long. This was all well and good until some dumb Canadian (she had Air Canada baggage, no self respecting American would carry something like that) wouldn't get out of my way going to the self check-in machine.
So I get through there and security and of course move on to an airport bar to get my Bloody Mary. I do this for two reasons: 1) a drink relaxes me. I'm not a bad flyer, but I do get a little antsy. 2) It helps me sleep on the flight. This is always key especially on a three hour flight.
I basically spent my afternoon in Dallas watching football and ironing my clothes.
I went to the Braves team dinner at a very nice Dallas steakhouse. First-class of course. Open bar the entire time we were there and huge steaks. No entree on the menu was under $35. I had a great NY Strip. I met pretty much everyone in the Minor League Organization, some front office people, and even though I wasn't introduced to him, I sat back-to-back with John Schurholtz at dinner (he's a pretty short dude).
After dinner was when the week took its turn. Yes the I knew where this was heading after the first night. My boss and the boss of the Richmond employees ditch us as we're leaving the restaurant to head back to the hotel in a Hummer. So we hop a cab. Get back to the hotel and I pretty much get ditched by the Richmond people (because I'm the new guy and they just aren't sure about me) and my boss is no where to be found. Awesome. Basically was in my room the first night by 11:30.
Monday
My boss apparently hooked up with some of his old buddies from Winston-Salem Sunday night and got blitzed (thanks for the invite). The best part of this was him falling asleep and leaving the room about 3 times during our minor league team meeting Monday morning. That's right. In the presence of all the higher ups, all of the other teams, my boss is passing out at the meeting table.
Well after this (11am) my boss literally disappears for the rest of the day. Here he was up in his room throwing up and sleeping. So I went to the luncheon, meetings, and started interviewing interns by myself. I ended up going to Hooters for MNF with one of my former coworkers (JW) who was job hunting. This was good times and saved the day a little bit.
Tuesday
This was a pretty decent day. League meeting in the morning, interview some more in the afternoon w/ the bossman. Baseball America awarded the Braves with Organization of the Year so we got to go to the Baseball America Banquet. Free food and free booze for about 4 hours. This is where I think that I grew on the Richmond crowd a little. I'm definitely very charming.
After this dinner I run into another former coworker (RL). Me and my boss ended up sitting with him in the hotel atrium drinking and talking about how my old team is heading further into the toilet because of who is running the operation for about 5 hours. This was good because it showed my boss that I wasn't exaggerating the circumstances.
Wednesday
Another short league meeting in the morning. Go to the Trade Show for a little while. And then the Gala. You would have thought that this would be at the ballpark, no. Its at some redneck bar instead. Food wasn't that great but it was free. Beer was free. I rode a mechanical bull and got an old time picture taken with some of the other Minor League people. They had armadillo racing too. 10 roles around and they literally brought cops in to push us out of the bar. Ridiculous.
Go back to the hotel, run into JW and find out that he got a job. So we went to the gas station and bought a case of beer and sat in the lobby and drank (beers at the lobby bar were $6, I'm poor). Then some yahoo Latino comes over and starts yelling at us b/c its illegal to bring beer and drink it in the lobby. He actually grabbed what was left off the table. I grabbed it back and took it up to my room.
I'm going to skip Thursday because it was boring. Aside from the Cowboy Cheerleaders performing at the closing banquet. Probably the highlight of the week.
Basically I couldn't get anyone to go down to Lower Greenville with me, my boss ditched me half the time when I basically knew no one in the organization, and I did exactly 0 shots (compared to somewhere in the 25 range last Dallas trip).
So here's what I've come up with. Dallas isn't as fun without Hughes. My boss now can't hold my old boss's jock, and there are some snobs in the Braves organization.
A few more thoughts. My former GM's wife never stopped to say hello to me the entire time, though her husband was more than cordial (though he told RL that I had matured, look in the fucking mirror). When his team won the Promotions award he thanked the new ownership, the FSL, and his wife. No mention of his staff. Nice. The Cowboy Cheerleaders were really hot. There was only 1 Nubian princess in the 12, but she was a good one to bring.
That's it, I've got nothing.

3 Comments:
I failed to mention that the flight to Dallas was awful b/c when I got to the bar they wouldn't serve me b/c it was before noon on Sunday. So I couldn't sleep on the plane b/c of no alcohol and the guy next to me who needed about 3 doses of Ridilin.
The lesson here is:
Nothing is as fun without me.
I may be an awful dude, but I'm great to travel (and drink) with. Our trip to Montana will be MUCH better.
That's hilarious that you saw Weinhold and Roy, though not nearly as funny as you being ignored by Babs.
Where did Weiny get a job? I would've given a couple of hundred dollars to have been around Jeff for the first half of that MNF game.
I'm willing to bet that since he won the promotions award, Buck still thinks all is well in the organization.
There were very few highlights during this trip and I remember all of it (blackouts are fun). I sat in the hotel atrium and talked to Roy for about 5 hours Tuesday night. It was great. We just aired everything out.
Weihold actually got the ticket job in Salem, VA. So he'll be about 2 hours away from me.
Like I said, Buck was cordial. But one of the conversations that I had with Roy was the hilarity that will ensue this summer as Buck tries to dance around rumors of the team's impending move to Orlando.
