Lost at Sea

I haven’t written for a while for good reason. I write these excuses for posts while I’m at work. Usually towards the end of the day when I wouldn’t be doing anything any ways. With that said the internet was down Monday and Friday and I was out of town for a league meeting yesterday. So let me cover some recent events and some of my own discoveries from the past few days.

How much do you think Clinton Portis got fined for wearing maroon socks during Sunday night’s game? We all know what a huge stickler the NFL is on uniforms. So I’m sure that wearing different colored socks for a nationally televised game will cost him some dough. But what does he care, he’s crazy.

Smush Parker is off to a ridiculous start for the Lakers. This really makes me sick because the Cavs were the team that gambled on him out of Fordham as a free agent. He played well in 2002-03 and got into 66 games. But of course he wasn’t good enough to keep because we had Kevin Ollie. How great would he look in the Cavs’s backcourt now? A point guard that can handle, play defense, and shoot all in one. He’s Eric Snow and Damon Jones if they were “smushed” together and a couple of inches taller.

One of the best things about having Direct TV was that I got the NBA League Pass for the first week of the season for free. I watched a ton of games. But by far my favorite games to watch were Celtics games for one reason, Tommy Heinsohn. He’s so awesome because you can tell he really knows everything about the game and is just going to call it like it is. But the best part about it is “Tommy Points”. Any time a Celtics player makes a hustle play they get a “Tommy Point”. This involves showing the replay with a goofy little animated Tommy in the corner and the real Tommy just going nuts over the play. One of the best gimmicks in sports.

Brooks Bollinger is the starting QB for the Jets because of injury. Jim Sorgi is the backup for the Colts. I’m sure both of these are much better athletes than me with much better arms. But if you are looking for quality QB why are you taking guys from Wisconsin? I like for my QBs to throw more than 10 times per game in college.

(Its obvious these guys were picked as much for their character and coachablity as skill. And they played in a good program like Wisconsin. I’ve always been a big proponent of taking quality guys from good programs as opposed to taking flyers on guys from small schools, i.e. Spergon Wynn out of SW Texas St. instead of a guy like Tom Brady from Michigan in 2000.)

Are football players getting dumber? I’ve seen more blatant blocks in the back this year than ever before. How hard is it to realize that if you can see the guys name you aren’t allowed to hit him? Brainpower.

My flag football team lost their last game 19-18 Saturday. We finished 0-6. This last team that beat us finished 6-0. That fact that it was close is no consolation. We went up 18-12 in the 2nd half when one of our safeties picked off a pass and ran it back 70 yards for a TD. And we had them 4th and 5 from midfield with 2 minutes to go and let them bust one for a TD. And then their ball carrier ran through 3 of our defenders for the conversion. It was really disappointing. But we didn’t deserve to win that game because our offense was awful. The kids literally took about two steps back from the way they played the week before.

I saw that Ron Harper is one of Flip Saunders’s assistants this season. Of all of the horrible Cleveland team trades in my lifetime, Ron Harper for the rights to Danny Ferry is by far the worst. Harper was really getting into the prime of his career averaging right around 19 or 20 per game. I’ve always been convinced that if the Cavs keep Harper they beat the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals in 1992. That’s my fantasy any ways.

I was wasting time the other day perusing the Ohio HS Athletic sight’s football records. One record that really jumped out at me. Former Ohio State wide out and Bedford High stud Bam Childress returned 21 punts for TDs in his high school career. The next closest guy had seven. That just blew me away. Bam was only about 5’8” so I’m sure he was hard to find. I always felt that Ohio State never figured out how to use him properly.

Last thing, there is only one New Philadelphia football player to hold a state record. Larry Denmon returned a punt 108 yards for a TD in 1964. That’s the first time I had ever heard of this record. You would think a small school like good old NPHS would have some kind of banner for this guy or something. I mean 108 yards; chances are its never going to be broken.

One more, Sonics vs. Cavs tonight. LeBron dominates, Cavs win 114-103. We aren’t a very good defensive team.

I had a post about Smush last week. He's really exceeding even the highest expectations that anybody could have had for him at this pointin the season. GO SMUSH!!

The record that Bam Childress holds is amazing. A guy that shifty (you would assume with that number of punt returns)should've been put in more YAC situations during his career at OSU. Still 21 punt returns for TDs is astounding.
