I"m a Bum

You know, I figured out why I never write anymore. I’m just too lazy. That and its just too much work for me to keep mental notes over a couple of days to piece together a blog that virtually no one will read. But alas I find myself writing again. I guess for the sheer fact of wanting to see my thoughts in print. So here are some from the recent weeks.

The Super Bowl was a close game this year but I never felt like the Eagles were in it. They really did seem to have that “we’re just happy to be here” look. Even when they got up in the first half I never really felt like they could knock off the Pats. Maybe it’s the fact that I was drunk by half time. Yes halftime, I paced myself this year.

I was very pleased to see the Browns hire Romeo Crennel as their new head coach. At this point I think that they got it right this time. What is key here is who he hires onto his staff. I like the Mo Carthon hire. He’s got successful experience. He’s coached for teams that have made the playoffs and that is key. This regime must build and maintain a winning attitude. I have no problem with the hiring of Pacells/Belichik disciples. They do have 5 rings between them.

I can’t wait for football to start again. I’m looking forward to the draft as much as any impending event in the next 3 months. And I was so excited on Friday when I found that the Bowling Green Falcons posted their recruiting high light reel on their website. I must’ve watched it 5 times. Awesome. The lack of quality sports activity this time of year drives me nuts. Don’t get me wrong I love college basketball and the LeBron led Cavs, but nothing can substitute for football.

Its Valentine’s Day. It comes at such a horrible time of year for the work I’m in right now. I’m working minimum 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. So basically by the time I get home tonight I’m in the mood to sit on the couch and that’s about it. The things we do for love.

Going back to the BG Falcons for a minute. The basketball team won AT Kent State Saturday. That’s the first time that’s happened in as long as I can remember. This is by far the best team they’ve had since 2002. The sad thing is that it could be even better had Ronald Lewis not been a selfish bastard and transferred. Lewis was 2nd team all MAC last season and led the team in scoring. He’s 6’4” so he’s a good sized 2-guard in the MAC. Well like most college ballers with any talent Lewis wants a shot at the NBA. He thinks his best chance at that is by showing the league that he can run the point. He’s probably right, but Dan Dakich didn’t think that would be in the best interest of the team so he refused his request. Lewis in turn transferred to Ohio State in August. What a blow to the team. If they had him either running the point or playing the 2 we would win the MAC this season. Right now the Falcons have two guys they can count on each night (Reimhold & Almanson), but lack that third cog to make it a consistent winning machine. What might have been?

I made my first alumni donation to BG Friday. It wasn’t much but I figured that every little bit helps. One of my best friends was a student telemarketer in college. He hated it. With that in mind, I’m not sure if I donated because I felt the school could use it or because I remember how miserable that job made my buddy and I figured my donation might keep this girl from shooting herself. Cold calling is one of the worst things ever. I wish someone would outlaw it.

Florida drivers are the worst drivers on Earth. I’m convinced. Case in point. I’m leaving my apartment complex today and there are 3 cars in front of me getting ready to pull out onto the main road. As we’re waiting for traffic to pass a school bus pulls up to pick up the kids at the stop. Now this is a 4 lane, separated highway so people going north bound don’t need to stop, but every going south has to. A perfect opportunity to get out onto the road right, WRONG!!! All three of these idiots is crossing into the north bound side, but they freeze when the bus stops. I honked my horn multiple times before the first car woke up and went. And then the next car proceeded to sit there and gawk. There was even a straggler kid so the window was open that much longer. And still nothing. This was a good 30 second window and just as the bus was getting ready to go the 2nd guy pulled out. I could have been half way to the highway by this time. So needless to say I was fuming before I even got out of the parking lot today. Fun times.

You do make me dumber, Calvin. At least you started writing again. It's like doing drugs, except minus any fun. Oh, and no hookers. That, too.
